The Commissioner of the Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA), Mr. Mahmoud Moallim Abdulle, and a delegation he led participated in a high-level meeting of IGAD member states on El Niño preparedness in the Horn of Africa, held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

The meeting, held from 15–17 September 2026, focused on strengthening regional preparedness, particularly for the risks of heavy rainfall and flooding, with emphasis on early warning, early action, and regional coordination.

Participants discussed the El Niño forecast and preparedness needs and agreed to strengthen data sharing and regional cooperation to reduce the anticipated risks.

At the conclusion of the meeting, SoDMA Commissioner Mr. Mahmoud Moallim Abdulle presented the Government of Somalia’s ongoing efforts to mitigate the impacts of El Niño and flooding, highlighting the importance of cooperation among countries across the region.
