MOGADISHU, SOMALIA — In a move that reflects a shared commitment to supporting affected communities, the Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA) and the Italian organization COOPI held their first official meeting. The meeting was attended by SoDMA’s Commissioner, Mr. Mohamud Moallim Abdulle, the Head of Mission for COOPI in Somalia and Kenya, Mr. Manuel Ciarcelluti, and several senior officials from both sides.

The meeting explored ways to establish a sustainable strategic partnership, and both parties agreed to draft a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at a later date. This MoU will serve as the official framework for a collaboration aimed at strengthening Somalia’s capacity to respond to disasters and support its most vulnerable populations.

The key areas of cooperation include:

  • Community-Based Early Warning: Developing effective early warning systems to reduce human and material losses.
  • Disaster Risk Reduction: Implementing joint programs to mitigate risks associated with natural and climate-related phenomena.
  • Support for Displaced Persons: Providing support to displaced and affected communities due to drought, floods, and conflicts, with a focus on building their resilience and restoring their livelihoods.

Statements from Officials

The Commissioner of the Agency, Mr. Mohamud Moallim Abdulle, affirmed that this meeting represents “a turning point in our national efforts to unify our endeavors with our international partners. We believe that joint action is the optimal way to alleviate the suffering of affected communities and build their resilience.”

For his part, COOPI’s Head of Mission, Mr. Manuel Ciarcelluti, emphasized the importance of national partnerships in achieving an effective humanitarian response, confirming his organization’s commitment to operating within SoDMA’s official frameworks. He added, “We look forward to a close partnership that contributes to providing more sustainable humanitarian solutions.”

Significance of the Visit

Following the meeting, the COOPI delegation conducted a field visit to the National Early Warning Center of SoDMA. They were briefed on the vital role the center plays in monitoring and analyzing potential risks.

This visit is an important step in informing international partners about national capabilities, which enhances coordination and contributes to a more effective response. At the conclusion of the visit, commemorative photos were taken of everyone.
