MOGADISHU, SOMALIA — In a strategic move to strengthen Somalia’s climate resilience, the Somali Disaster Management Agency, led by its Commissioner H.E. Mr. Mohamud Moallim Abdulle, actively participated in the National Climate Outlook Forum for the Deyr (OND) season, which officially commenced today, Tuesday, in the capital Mogadishu. Organized by the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change in the Somali Federal Government, the forum is set to continue for two days. It brought together a distinguished group of representatives from the Federal and State Governments, international experts, and civil society organizations, affirming Somalia’s steadfast commitment to climate security and collaborative action in the face of environmental challenges.
Held under the theme, “Climate Science and Forecasts for a More Resilient Somalia,” the discussions focused on the vital importance of scientific data and meteorological forecasts in safeguarding lives and infrastructure, and in enhancing the country’s capacity to adapt to natural disasters.
In his pivotal address, the Commissioner of the Agency, H.E. Mr. Mohamud Moallim Abdulle, underscored the agency’s proactive and pioneering role in spearheading prevention and preparedness efforts. He emphasized that “the timely provision of accurate climate information is the cornerstone of any effective national strategy for risk reduction, and for mitigating its humanitarian and economic consequences.”
He added that “our ability to predict disasters before they strike is the best investment we can make to protect our people and their resources. Every piece of information that arrives on time means lives saved and livelihoods protected. This is the very essence of our humanitarian and national mission at the Agency.”
He concluded his remarks by stressing that achieving these goals requires a concerted effort and stronger national, regional, and international partnerships. He called upon all parties to work hand-in-hand to build a Somali society that is more robust and capable of withstanding escalating climate challenges.
The forum provided a platform for constructive dialogue, where participants reviewed climate conditions from previous seasons and explored ways to leverage meteorological forecasts to mitigate the effects of recurring natural disasters.
The agency’s participation in this event highlights its exceptional achievements, which are considered a role model for the region, first and foremost among them being the National Early Warning Center.
This center, which reports directly to the agency, is the first specialized center of its kind in the country. It has contributed with great effectiveness to protecting thousands of lives and properties from the risks of natural disasters such as droughts, floods, and cyclones. Thanks to its highly trained national team and strong relationships with regional and international institutions, the center has become a fundamental pillar of the community early warning system. It is a unique national achievement that the Government of National Interest, led by Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre, is proud of, as it represents a solid foundation for a safer and more stable future for the Somali people.
