MOGADISHU, SOMALIA – In a move reflecting the deep strategic and humanitarian partnership between the Federal Republic of Somalia and the People’s Republic of China, the Commissioner of the Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA), Mr. Mohamud Moallim Abdulle, held an official meeting on Tuesday with H.E. Wang Yu, the Chinese Ambassador to Somalia, at the Chinese Embassy in Mogadishu. The meeting focused on accelerating the implementation of joint projects in the disaster management sector, with the aim of strengthening Somalia’s capacity for effective response to national and humanitarian crises.

The two sides discussed key areas that will enhance infrastructure and human capacity in disaster management, including:

* Maintenance and Development of SoDMA’s Central Warehouse: Progress on this vital facility, a logistical hub for storing and distributing humanitarian aid, was reviewed.
* Establishment of the Emergency Operations Center in Las Anod: The parties followed up on the construction of the Emergency Operations Center and its warehouse in the city of Las Anod, which will serve as a strategic launchpad for disaster management in the northern regions of the country.
* Human Resource Development: Discussions covered ways to enhance human capacity, as a number of SoDMA staff are currently undergoing specialized training in Beijing on the latest techniques for disaster management and recovery.

During the meeting, Commissioner of the agency Mr. Mohamud Moallim Abdulle expressed his profound gratitude for the Chinese support, stating: “These strategic projects highlight our deep appreciation for the continuous support of the People’s Republic of China. They are not merely emergency assistance but a long-term investment in Somalia’s resilience, empowering us to protect our people and strengthen our national stability.”

For his part, the Chinese Ambassador H.E. Wang Yu reaffirmed his country’s unwavering commitment, saying: “Our contribution to building SoDMA’s capacity is part of China’s broader commitment to international humanitarian work. We will continue to stand with the brotherly Somali people and ensure the success of these projects, which will help establish a strong infrastructure for disaster management.”

This active humanitarian cooperation showcases China’s role as a strategic partner in Somalia, where its support extends beyond emergency aid to include strengthening the capacity of national institutions and enabling them to rely on themselves in facing crises. In doing so, China contributes to building a logistical and humanitarian safety net that ensures the timely delivery of aid to the most vulnerable, paving the way towards a safer and more stable Somalia.
