The Commissioner of the Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA), Mr. Mahmoud Moallim Abdulle, today opened a National Conference in Mogadishu aimed at accelerating preparedness for the anticipated impacts of Super El Niño 2026.

The conference brought together representatives from Federal Government ministries, Federal Member State ministries responsible for humanitarian affairs and disaster management, the Office of the President, the leadership of the Chamber of Commerce, the Council of Somali Scholars, as well as representatives from international and local organizations.

The conference highlighted concerns over climate forecasts indicating a high likelihood of a Super El Niño event and heavy rainfall, at a time when many parts of the country are still recovering from the impacts of drought.

SoDMA Commissioner Mahmoud Moallim Abdulle stated that Somalia’s humanitarian situation requires urgent coordination and collaboration to ensure that vulnerable communities receive timely assistance.

He urged the Federal Government, Federal Member States, and humanitarian partners to develop a unified preparedness plan centered on anticipatory action, in order to reduce disaster impacts and save lives.
