The Government Media and Communication Meeting officially opened today in Mogadishu and is being chaired by the Commissioner of the Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA), Mr. Mahmoud Moallin Abdulle. The meeting is focusing on the drought situation in the country, strengthening public awareness, and unifying the messages delivered to the public.
Participants include the Spokesperson of the Federal Government of Somalia, Mr. Abdinassir Ahmed Bashir, directors of government media and communication, and media officers from government agencies and ministries, with the aim of strengthening media coordination and supporting drought response efforts.
Meeting participants agreed to work fully on preventing and addressing the drought situation in the country. They also emphasized that the media should take a visible role in supporting the delivery of assistance and mobilizing support for vulnerable people living in the hardest-hit areas.
The SoDMA Commissioner stated that Somalia is facing a severe drought that has significantly affected all regions of the country, especially communities dependent on livestock and farming. The drought has caused widespread water shortages, a decline in agricultural production, and serious hardship for pastoralist communities.
Mr. Mahmoud Moallin Abdulle noted that international humanitarian assistance has declined, creating obstacles for relief and lifesaving operations. He stressed the need to strengthen national unity and self-reliance among the Somali people to prevent the situation from escalating into a widespread humanitarian disaster.
Finally, the Commissioner of SoDMA called on both public and private media outlets to fulfill their public awareness role and to unify official messages related to drought prevention and response, so that communities receive accurate and consistent information.
