The Commissioner of the Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA), Mr. Mahamud Moallim Abdulle, today welcomed Ms. Ugochi Daniels, Deputy Director General for Operations of the International Organization for Migration (IOM), at the agency’s headquarters in Mogadishu as part of her official visit to Somalia.
The high-level meeting focused on deepening cooperation between SoDMA and IOM to address Somalia’s critical humanitarian challenges, including widespread displacement, drought, and the escalating impacts of climate change and conflict.
Both parties emphasized the urgent need to enhance coordination in delivering timely and effective aid to vulnerable communities across the country. Discussions centered on current response gaps, the need for innovative and sustainable solutions, and opportunities for scaling joint operations to better support populations affected by disasters and displacement.
Ms. Daniels praised SoDMA’s tireless efforts in leading and coordinating emergency response across the country, noting that their swift interventions have been instrumental in supporting people in crisis. She reaffirmed IOM’s commitment to reinforcing its support for SoDMA’s humanitarian mission.
> “IOM will continue to stand with SoDMA in developing solutions that are not only effective in the short term but sustainable in the long term,” said Ms. Daniels. “We commend your leadership and are proud to be part of this joint effort to assist vulnerable communities.”
Commissioner Mahamud expressed his gratitude to Ms. Daniels and the IOM delegation, acknowledging IOM’s critical role in strengthening Somalia’s disaster response capacity.
> “IOM is a strategic partner that has helped us respond effectively to the recurring disasters in the country,” said Mr. Mahamud. “We believe this collaboration is crucial for finding sustainable and environmentally based solutions.”
The meeting concluded with both parties agreeing to accelerate joint humanitarian operations, foster innovative approaches, and deepen strategic collaboration aimed at reaching more people in need across Somalia.
