The Commissioner of the Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA), Mr. Mahmoud Moallin Abdulle, inaugurated a conference on climate change adaptation and strengthening community resilience held in Mogadishu, organized by CARE International and SOMREP.
The Commissioner emphasized the importance of accelerating the implementation of early warning-based approaches and anticipatory actions to prevent the impacts of disasters.
He also noted that recurring droughts have severely affected people’s livelihoods, food security, and the economy, creating a need to strengthen warning systems in order to reduce losses.
He further highlighted the importance of linking climate data with community livelihoods, particularly in pastoral areas, to enable effective planning for livestock movement, access to pasture and water, and market access.
The Commissioner added that progress has been made in early warning systems and anticipatory action measures, and stressed that it is essential to strengthen cooperation between government institutions and international partners.
Finally, Mr. Mahmoud Moallin Abdulle reaffirmed the government’s commitment to building resilient communities through the implementation of effective approaches aimed at reducing the impacts of disasters.
