The Commissioner of the Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA), Mr. Mahmoud Moallim Abdulle, today opened a regional meeting in Beledweyne, Hiiraan Region, focused on the 2026 El Niño forecast and strengthening preparedness for the risks associated with its potential impacts.

The meeting, which will continue over the coming days, was attended today by religious scholars, traditional elders, women, youth, civil society organizations, and representatives of international and local organizations. Regional and district authorities, as well as the Hirshabelle Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management, are also expected to participate in the coming days.

The meeting focused on sharing climate forecast information, assessing anticipated risks, and taking early actions to reduce the potential impacts of disasters.

Speaking at the meeting, SoDMA Commissioner Mr. Mahmoud Moallim Abdulle focused on the risks of flooding and heavy rainfall expected in the region, emphasizing the importance of taking immediate early actions to reduce disaster impacts.

The Commissioner also called on communities to strengthen the clearing and maintenance of waterways, early warning systems, the preparation of emergency response supplies, and evacuation plans in order to protect lives and property.

In conclusion, Mr. Mahmoud Moallim Abdulle emphasized the importance of cooperation and coordination among regional and district authorities, international and local organizations, and other stakeholders to ensure timely, effective, and well-coordinated preparedness measures to mitigate the anticipated risks.
