Dhoobley, Lower Juba — A high-level delegation led by the Commissioner of Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA),Mr Mahmoud Maalin Abdulle, together with the Deputy Special Representative of the United Nations for Somalia and Humanitarian Coordinator, George Conway, today arrived in Dhoobley district in the Lower Juba region of Jubbaland State.
The delegation was warmly received by the Jubbaland Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management—who also serves as Chair of the Jubbaland Drought Committee—alongside regional and district authorities.
The visit aimed to conduct an on-the-ground assessment of the worsening drought conditions in Dhoobley and surrounding areas, to establish a clear picture of humanitarian impacts and identify urgent needs.
During the mission, the delegation met with vulnerable communities, including internally displaced families severely affected by prolonged drought and widespread livestock losses. Consultations were also held with community leaders to gather firsthand accounts of the drought’s effects on livelihoods, water access, and essential services.
Concluding the visit, the SoDMA Commissioner stated that the delegation had directly observed the severity of the situation facing residents of Dhoobley. He underscored the urgent need for immediate action and strengthened coordination among national authorities, international partners, and humanitarian actors to respond effectively to the crisis.
