The Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA) is currently monitoring the severe impact that drought has had on people and livestock in many parts of the country.
Qalqalloocan, an area under Mudug Region, is one of the places that has been heavily affected by the drought. The drought has caused the death of many animals. Livestock, especially camels, are the backbone of life for the people living in these areas.
One of the residents of Qalqalloocan, near Galkayo, while describing the impact of the drought, told us that the drought has killed even the animals that were considered the most resilient. He said:
“There is no green vegetation in this area for livestock to graze on. Camels were the most resilient animals people kept, yet now their carcasses are lying everywhere.”
