The Commissioner of the Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA), Mr. Mahmoud Moallim Abdulle, today received the Chairman of the National Fishermen’s Cooperative, Mr. Hassan Mohamed Rooble, and officials from the cooperative at his office.
The meeting focused on preparedness for the anticipated impacts of Super El Niño, particularly flood risks, and the role the fishermen’s cooperative can play in public awareness, training, and supporting communities and personnel involved in flood preparedness and response efforts.
The Chairman of the National Fishermen’s Cooperative, Mr. Hassan Mohamed Rooble, pledged the cooperative’s full participation in efforts to strengthen disaster preparedness and its support for emergency response operations when disasters occur, particularly in communities located along Somalia’s rivers and coastline.
The SoDMA Commissioner, Mr. Mahmoud Moallim Abdulle, stated that the Agency has deployed boats to areas most vulnerable to flooding to support emergency response and the evacuation of affected communities. He emphasized the need for the National Fishermen’s Cooperative to play an active role in training and supporting personnel who will operate these boats, thereby strengthening emergency response and community rescue capacity.
