The Commissioner of the Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA), Mr. Mahmoud Moallim Abdulle, delivered a speech at an event commemorating World Humanitarian Day, observed on 19 August, under this year’s theme, “Act for Humanity.” He commended humanitarian workers who remain committed to saving the lives of people affected by disasters.

The event was attended by George Conway, Deputy Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General and Humanitarian Coordinator for Somalia, as well as representatives of organizations working in the humanitarian sector.

Commissioner Mahmoud Moallim Abdulle stated that nearly 6 million people in Somalia are facing severe hunger, while approximately 2 million people are in Emergency (IPC Phase 4). He also noted that 1.85 million children are at risk of acute malnutrition, while 3.8 million people are internally displaced.

The SoDMA Commissioner warned of the risks of flooding and the impacts of El Niño, noting that forecasts indicate more than a 90% likelihood of El Niño conditions between October and December 2026. He called for early warnings to be translated into immediate action to protect lives and ensure that essential services are adequately prepared.

In conclusion, the Commissioner emphasized that SoDMA will continue to lead and coordinate humanitarian response efforts, working closely with the Federal Government, Federal Member States, and humanitarian partners.
