ADDIS ABABA, ETHIOPIA – In a pioneering step for Somalia’s disaster management efforts, the Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA) actively participated in a high-level regional forum held today, September 8, 2025, on the sidelines of the Second Africa Climate Summit (ACS 2) in Addis Ababa. The honorable Dr. Ahmed Abdi Aden, the Deputy Commissioner, is leading the agency’s delegation and is being accompanied by Mr. Khadar Sheikh Mohamed, Director of the Disaster Risk Management Department.
During a side meeting, Mr. Khadar Sheikh Mohamed delivered an outstanding presentation titled “Unlocking Disaster Financing and Risk-Informed Investments in Fragile Settings of Eastern Africa.” The event, organized by IGAD, brought together a selection of experts and officials to address crucial regional challenges.
Mr. Mohammed highlighted the unique challenges Somalia faced and its proactive approach to building resilience against climate-induced disasters. His participation affirmed Somalia’s commitment to advancing the dialogue on climate adaptation, risk reduction, and securing sustainable financing to combat the devastating effects of climate-related disasters. The presentation focused on leveraging data and strategic investments to mitigate climate risks and improve crisis response.
The presentation underscored the need to shift from emergency responses to proactive, well-thought-out investments. Somalia’s experience demonstrated that predictable and accessible financing was not just a political goal; it was a fundamental necessity for saving lives and protecting livelihoods.
