HIGHLIGHTS (30 April 2025)

  • In Response: Due to the poor performance of the past two rainy seasons (Dayr and Gu) and the delayed onset of the current Gu rainy season, along with ongoing conflicts in many regions of the country and a recent reduction in humanitarian funding, the Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA) has significantly scaled up its food
    assistance and delivery efforts to support the most vulnerable communities. SoDMA’s Humanitarian Department, has delivered food
    assistance to 5,467 households. Most of the recipients are among the populations who were struggling with prolonged drought and ongoing armed conflicts, which led to widespread displacement, loss of livestock, Crop Failed, and urgent humanitarian needs across various regions and districts of the country. the main concern remains the
    worsening humanitarian crisis and the recent reduction in funding, which threaten to increase the risk of hunger among vulnerable populations.

  •  In rainfall forecast: The Department of Disaster Risk Management in SoDMA has released Weekly Rainfall Forecast (April 22–29, 2025)
  • Moderate rains (50-80mm) are expected over Bay, Bakool and Lowers Shabele regions and parts of Middle Juba region with chances of flash floods in vulnerable areas
  • Light rains (less than 20 mm) are likely over the rest of the country except over most parts of Hirshabele, Galmudug, Puntland and Somaliland where dry conditions are likely to prevail.
  • Few areas in south-western part of the country received rainfall in the past week with daily accumulation in Bardhere reaching 70mm(A) and also Mogadishu district at 50mm  (B)

Situation overview.

  • The Shabelle River has flooded near the village of Beyxaw, located to the east of Jowhar district.
  •  Additionally, the river has also flooded in the villages of Muryaale and Gaafaay, situated to the northeast of Jowhar district.
  • The Jowhar River level has reached above 5 meters, which is considered a high-risk leve

  • Food insecurity: The Department of Food Security has released an updated projection for April to June 2025. The analysis estimates that 4.6 million people — approximately 24% of Somalia’s population will face crisis-level food insecurity (IPC Phase 3 or above) . Crisis or worse, between April – June 2025.
  • This includes 1.8 million children with acute malnutrition, 479,000 of them facing Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM) and around 1,292,000 with Moderate Acute Malnutrition (MAM) Driven by poor rainfall, flooding, conflict, and high food prices, the convergence of all these crises is worsening the situation of food insecurity in Somalia

  • In Health: The Health Department of SoDMA held a high-level Coordination Meeting on Enhancing Medical Response in Conflict-Affected Areas. The meeting was convened at SoDMA headquarters to strengthen and harmonize medical response efforts for communities affected by the ongoing armed conflict against Al-Shabaab in various districts. The session was chaired by the Commissioner of SoDMA and attended by the Acting Minister of Health, the Ministers of Health from Hirshabelle and South West States, as well as senior representatives from the respective Ministries of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management(MoHADMA)

Other Important Events and Relevant Intervention:

  • SoDMA part of the Delegate welcoming Prime Minister’s to SSC-Khatumo: The SoDMA Commissioner was part of the delegation which welcomed H.E. Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre to SSC-Khatumo. During the visit, the Prime Ministers laid the foundation for multiple projects, including the construction of a State Emergency Operations Center (SEOC). SoDMA was among the first agencies to respond to the previous conflict in SSC, providing food, non-food items (NFIs), shelter, and facilitating medical evacuations for the wounded to Mogadishu to be further treated.

  • Country Humanitarian Forum CHF Held in Galkacyo: SoDMA hosted this quarter’s Country Humanitarian Forum in Galkacyo, Galmudug. The theme of the forum was “Strengthening Humanitarian Resilience: focusing on droughts, displacement, and emergency response in Somalia”. The high level event was attended by the SoDMA Commissioner, officials from Galmudug, representatives from the Office of the President and South West Statehouse, various ministries, the Norwegian Ambassador, ECHO, the DSRSG/HC/RC, Country Directors of UN agencies, INGOs, local NGOs, and members of the private sector.

  • Support Provided to Somali National Army (SNA) : The SoDMA Commissioner visited the SNA and provided an ambulance equipped with a medical box to help transport wounded individuals from the battlefield to hospitals, ensuring that those in need of medical assistance receive it promptly and professionally.

  • SoDMA Hosts Shock Response Coordination Meeting: On April 17th, SoDMA hosted a Shock Response Coordination Meeting. Attendees included the DSRSG Mr. George Conway, the heads of OCHA and WFP, representatives from FCDO, the World Bank, UN agencies, INGOs, and local NGOs. The meeting addressed the current drought situation and funding shortages, emphasizing the importance of enhancing government-led cash transfer systems and positioning SoDMA as the lead coordinating body
