  • In DRM: UNEXPECTED EXTREME HEAVY RAINFALL . On the 9 of May 2025, there was an unprecedented flash flood event in Banadir region at large as record -breaking rainfall which continued 2 to 10 hours that was amounting between 95mm to 120mm which has triggered a devastating
    flash flood has occurred in Mogadishu as the epicenter of these devastated floods.

  • In Emergence: On 9th may 2025, intense and Heavy rainfall struck all districts of Mogadishu and the surrounding areas. The heavy rainfall with
    normal winds, nightlight and thunder has triggering widespread flash floods which swept forcefully across Highways and streets in the city. The
    heavy downpour led into the city devastating consequences, including the displacement of residents, extensive damage to homes, Neighborhoods
    and IDPs Camp submerged in water, loss of lives, and public infrastructure Destroyed included crucial Highways. The heavy Rainfall has left with
    Devastating Resulting to Community in Mogadishu city, many areas inaccessible and severely disrupted transportation and daily life. The Flash
    floods have severely affected three of the ancient districts in Mogadishu. where significant losses have been reported. Among the victims was Khadra Ciise and her family of eight, who were the most severely affected, faced a significant socioeconomic hardships as a result of
    the flash floods.

  • In Health: In 24 may a delegation led by the Commissioner of the National Disaster Management Agency, Mahmoud Macallin
    Abdulle, has Visited in Moqokori district of the Hiran region. The delegation delivered 1 ton of Medical Supplies intended to support
    local Communities in Hiran who currently engaged in operations against Terrorist.
  • In Response: Following the recent flash floods that struck Mogadishu and surrounding areas, the Somali Disaster Management Agency
    (SoDMA) co-ordinated life-saving assistance for 5,438 affected HH. Most of the recipients are families living in the Severely Impacted Districts of
    Mogadishu and Galkaio who were affected by the flash floods. The donations, consisting of food and non-food items (NFIs), were made possible
    through the generous support of the King Salman Relief and the Muslim World League.

Also SoDMA Continued it’s Delivery Food and NFI Assistance to 9,610 HH in May, across various regions of the country, with vulnerable groups
such as mothers and children in Banadir Hospital, and patients at Madina Hospital. Additionally, SoDMA has provided emergency lifesaving
assistance to Khardo’s family, who were faced most severely socio economic situation. The Assistance Consisted of : Foods, NFI, emergency
shelter.

Other Important Events and Relevant Intervention:

  • WISER Action: The Commissioner of the Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA), Mahamud Moallim Abdulle, officially launched the WISER Action First Africa project during an event held in Naivasha, Kenya. This significant initiative, with a budget exceeding $40 million, aims to strengthen disaster resilience among vulnerable communities across East Africa, including Somalia. The project will be implemented over four years by SoDMA in collaboration with national meteorological and disaster management agencies from various East African countries. It is funded by the United Kingdom through the Foreign, Common-wealth and Development Office (FCDO).

  • SoDMA–IGAD Cooperation: The Commissioner of the Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA), Mr. Mahamud Moallim Abdulle, received Ambassador Jamal Mohamed Hassan, Head of the IGAD Central Office for Climate Adaptation and Environmental Protection, at his office in Mogadishu. Their discussion focused on strengthening cooperation between SoDMA and IGAD and accelerating the implementation of recommendations from the 2023 El Niño Impact Assess-ment. Notably, Somalia remains the only IGAD member state to have completed a comprehensive assessment of the late 2023 El Niño impacts an effort critical to informing regional preparedness and response

  • SoDMA–China Humanitarian Engagement: The Commissioner of the Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA), Mr. Mahamud Moallim Abdulle, meeting Mogadishu with H.E. Mr. Wang Yu, the Chinese Ambassador to Somalia. Their discussions focused on the recent arrival of 1,226 tons of humanitarian aid from China and strategies for its effective distribution particularly to conflict affected districts in the Hiran region. They also explored opportunitiest o strengthen SoDMA’s staff capacity and operational efficiency through enhanced cooperation and support.

  • SoDMA–HC Monthly Meeting: The Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA) convened its monthly humanitarian coordination meeting in Mogadishu to assess the current humanitarian situation in the country. The meeting was co-chaired by SoDMA Commissioner Mahamud Moallim Abdulle and the United Nations Deputy Special Representative, Mr. George Conway. It was attended by the Head of OCHA Somalia, representatives from both sides, and technical experts from SoDMA. Key discussions focused on the growing financial challenges facing humanitarian operations—particularly the decline in donor funding and the urgent need to reassess priority activities, services, and ongoing interventions.
