LAS ANOD, SOMALIA — In a crucial step to bolster its emergency response capabilities, the Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA) today announced the launch of the implementation phase for the construction of the State Emergency Operations Center and its attached warehouse in the Northeast Regional State. This project, which represents a pivotal move towards enhancing disaster readiness, follows the cornerstone-laying ceremony by the Prime Minister last April and is funded by the Chinese Embassy in Mogadishu.
The launch ceremony was presided over by SoDMA Commissioner Mohamud Moallim Abdulle, alongside the Northeast Regional State’s Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management, Mr. Abdirisaq Yusuf Mohamed (Hindi), with the attendance of officials from the regional administration and representatives from the contracting company.
Strategic Importance for Facing Humanitarian Challenges
The establishment of this center and its attached warehouse is of paramount strategic importance for the region, which frequently faces severe climate challenges such as droughts and floods. The center will serve as a pivotal logistical base, enabling the pre-positioning of essential food and relief supplies. This will ensure the speed and effectiveness of the response during any crisis, thereby mitigating the negative impact on the lives of residents.
In his speech at the ceremony, SoDMA Commissioner Mohamud Moallim Abdulle affirmed: “This center is not just a building; it is a fundamental pillar of our nation’s resilience. It significantly strengthens our ability to protect our citizens and respond with dignity and speed to any crisis. This project reflects our government’s unwavering commitment to the safety and well-being of all Somalis.”
For his part, the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management for the state, Mr. Abdirisaq Yusuf Mohamed (Hindi), stated: “The people of the Northeast have long faced humanitarian challenges. This center will be a game-changer. It will allow us to coordinate with partners, preposition supplies, and reach affected communities faster than ever before. It is a direct investment in the security and future of all residents of this state.”
A representative for Sahal Construction, which was awarded the project contract, stated: “We are grateful to be the company chosen by the Federal Government to implement this crucial task for the Northeast Regional State. We recognize that this is a test for us to complete this mission to the best of our ability, and we commit to finishing it in three months or less.”
Conclusion
This project marks the beginning of a new phase in Somalia’s national efforts to establish sustainable disaster management infrastructure. Through this center, coordination with various government entities and international partners will be enhanced, ensuring an integrated and organized response to future challenges, and contributing to building a more resilient and secure society.
