Geneva, Switzerland – The Commissioner of the Somali Disaster Management Agency, Mahamuud Moallim spearheaded a Somali delegation at the 8th Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction (GPDRR2025), held from June 2-6, 2025, at the United Nations Centre in Geneva.
The quadrennial conference, organized by the United Nations for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR), convened over 2,700 delegates from 133 countries to advance global strategies for managing and reducing disaster risks.
The forum served as a critical platform for fostering leadership, enhancing coordination, and promoting community awareness to mitigate disaster impacts. Discussions centered on actionable strategies to meet the objectives of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction by 2030, emphasizing resilience and preparedness.
In a keynote address, Commissioner Moallim highlighted Somalia’s significant progress in disaster risk management, showcasing systems developed to safeguard lives and property. He reaffirmed the Federal Government of Somalia’s commitment to continuous improvement in building resilience against future challenges.
The summit underscored global advancements in risk management and encouraged collaborative efforts to strengthen national capacities for disaster preparedness by 2030.
