August 3, 2025 – Mogadishu, Somalia
In a significant show of solidarity and national unity, the Governor of the Banadir Region and Mayor of Mogadishu, Dr. Hassan Mohamed Hussein (Muungaab), today handed over a financial donation of $200,000 to the Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA) to aid drought-affected communities in the Awdal region.
The official handover ceremony was held in Mogadishu and attended by high-ranking Members of Parliament and Ministers from the Federal Government of Somalia, notably representing the people of Awdal. The donation is part of a broader emergency relief response aimed at addressing the escalating drought crisis in northern Somalia.
Receiving the donation, SoDMA Commissioner Mr. Mahamud Moallim Abdule expressed deep appreciation for Governor Muungaab’s timely intervention and generous support. He emphasized that the funds would be rapidly distributed to the affected districts in Awdal to alleviate the suffering of both the people and their livestock.
The humanitarian situation in Awdal continues to worsen as prolonged dry conditions have disrupted livelihoods, caused water shortages, and threatened food security for thousands. The Somali government, in collaboration with regional leaders and humanitarian partners, is stepping up efforts to mobilize resources and deliver aid to the hardest-hit areas.
This donation highlights the importance of inter-regional cooperation and national responsibility in tackling Somalia’s recurring climate challenges and ensuring that no region is left behind in times of crisis.
