MOGADISHU, SOMALIA — The Commissioner of the Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA), Mr. Mohamud Moallim Abdulle, announced the appointment of Mr. Abubakar Ahmed Mohamed as the new Director of the Food Security and Social Protection Department. This decision is part of the agency’s efforts to strengthen its capabilities in responding to humanitarian challenges.
The Commissioner of the agency, Mr. Abdulle, advised the new director to uphold transparency and accountability in his duties and wished him success in his new role.
Mr. Abubakar Ahmed Mohamed has a distinguished academic record and over a decade of professional experience in humanitarian and educational fields. He previously served as the head of the Food Security and Nutrition Department at SoDMA and the former Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management, a position he held for nearly seven years. He has participated in numerous meetings and conferences on food security and served as a liaison officer for the food security program between the agency and other humanitarian organizations.
In addition, Mr. Abubakar is a core member of the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification Technical Working Group (IPC-TWG) and holds an IPC Level 3 rating. From 2019 to 2025, he served as the secretary of the National Expert Panel for the IDDRSI initiative, where he was responsible for monitoring and evaluating programs for various ministries in Somalia.
Mr. Abubakar also worked as a part-time assistant to the general supervisor at the Somali Humanitarian Affairs Observatory in 2018 and 2019, focusing on monitoring food security information.
Mr. Abubakar Ahmed Mohamed is the second director to be appointed to this department since its establishment.
He holds two master’s degrees: one in Disaster Resilience and Leadership from Benadir University and another in Environmental Management and Sustainability from Accord University. He has also completed advanced training courses in food security.
