The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Mr. Abdisalam Abdi Ali, visited the headquarters of the Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA) today, where he held a special meeting with the Commissioner of the Agency, Mr. Mahamoud Moallin Abdulle.
The meeting focused in depth on the drought situation affecting the country, which is continuing to spread across different regions and is having a severe impact on the lives of the Somali people.
The Commissioner of SoDMA, Mr. Mahamoud Moallin Abdulle, provided the Minister with a detailed briefing on the current status of the drought, the scale of its impact on the population, and the urgent need for humanitarian assistance. He noted that in some areas the situation has reached a critical level, with many families facing acute food and water shortages.
After the meeting, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Abdisalam Abdi Ali spoke to the media and called on the international community and the Somali people—especially business leaders and religious scholars—to unite and take part in urgent relief efforts for those affected by the drought, whose lives are at risk.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Somalia also informed all embassies and international organizations that the Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA) is the only national institution officially mandated to coordinate, supervise, and manage all humanitarian relief and assistance operations in the country. Therefore, all cooperation and communication related to humanitarian aid should be conducted directly with SoDMA to ensure transparency, effectiveness, prevent duplication, and make sure aid reaches the intended beneficiaries properly.
