ADDIS ABABA, ETHIOPIA  – In a powerful testament to Somalia’s commitment to climate action and its rising stature on the continental stage, the Somalia Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA) plays a prominent role in the Second African Climate Summit. A high-level delegation, led by Dr. Ahmed Abdi Aden, the Deputy Commissioner of SoDMA, is actively participating in the vital discussions. The delegation also includes Mr. Khadar Sh. Mohamed, Director of Disaster Risk Management, who is sharing Somalia’s national vision for building resilience against climate extremes with his continental counterparts.

During a high-level discussion on Tuesday titled “Investing in Resilience against Climate Extremes in the Greater Horn of Africa,” Mr. Khadar presented Somalia’s national vision for transitioning from mere crisis response to building sustainable community and institutional resilience.

Mr. Khadar highlighted that Somalia, despite the severe challenges it faces from recurring droughts and floods, has accumulated valuable practical experience in managing these disasters. He affirmed that the solution lies in adopting a proactive approach focused on investing in specific priorities, including strengthening early warning systems, developing shock-resistant infrastructure, and building local capacities in the most vulnerable regions.

The director pointed out that Somalia places paramount importance on investing in climate data and services to ensure that accurate information reaches all levels of society. He emphasized that the efforts to build local capacities and train field teams are a fundamental pillar for a swift and effective response.

SoDMA’s participation in this important continental event underscores that Somalia is not just a recipient of aid but an active partner and a key contributor to shaping solutions for the continent’s shared climate challenges. Somalia’s experience garnered widespread attention, serving as an inspiring model for how to transform challenges into opportunities to build a safer and more resilient future.
