Mogadishu, Somalia — In a move that reflects Somalia’s commitment to enhancing its national capacity to face humanitarian challenges, the Commissioner of the Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA), Mr. Mohamud Moallim Abdulle, today hosted the Head of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Somalia, Mr. Manuel Marques Pereira, and an accompanying delegation of experts at the agency’s headquarters.
The meeting focused on exploring ways to strengthen bilateral cooperation in building national capacity for disaster management at both the federal and regional state levels. Discussions particularly addressed the mitigation of climate change risks, which are a major cause of internal and external displacement in the country, with the aim of protecting local communities and ensuring their stability.
For his part, Mr. Manuel Marques Pereira affirmed IOM’s unwavering commitment to supporting Somalia’s efforts in managing displacement and addressing the repercussions of humanitarian crises. He noted that cooperation with the Somali Disaster Management Agency is a cornerstone of their joint response, especially in building the resilience of communities in the face of climate change and natural disasters.
The SoDMA Commissioner emphasized the importance of coordination and joint action among all governmental and non-governmental organizations working in relief and disaster management. He considered unifying efforts as the most effective way to provide a swift and efficient response to those affected.
The Commissioner expressed his deep gratitude to IOM for its continuous and vital support, which directly contributes to improving the humanitarian situation in Somalia.
This meeting comes within the framework of SoDMA’s tireless efforts to strengthen its international and domestic partnerships, with the goal of achieving greater readiness to confront humanitarian crises and natural disasters and building a safer, more resilient future for the Somali people.
