The Commissioner of the Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA), Mr. Mahmoud Moallim Abdulle, and the Representative of the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) in Somalia, Mr. Hameed Nuru, have signed a five-year cooperation agreement to strengthen disaster preparedness and humanitarian response in Somalia.
The agreement focuses on enhancing Somalia’s capacity for risk forecasting, preparedness, early warning, early action, and emergency response to ensure more effective humanitarian assistance.
It also supports strengthening the national disaster risk management system, food security, humanitarian assistance, and community resilience, with the aim of reducing the impact of disasters and protecting the lives and livelihoods of the Somali people.
WFP Somalia Representative Mr. Hameed Nuru said the agreement will deepen cooperation between the two sides and contribute to building a disaster management system capable of responding rapidly to humanitarian risks and the impacts of climate change.
The SoDMA Commissioner, Mr. Mahmoud Moallim Abdulle, emphasized that the partnership is vital for strengthening national preparedness and the capacity of Somali institutions to respond to disasters, with priority given to early warning and early action. He also expressed appreciation for WFP’s continued support to Somalia.
