The Commissioner of the Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA), Mr. Mahmoud Moallim Abdulle<\/strong>, delivered a speech at an event commemorating World Humanitarian Day<\/strong>, observed on 19 August<\/strong>, under this year\u2019s theme, \u201cAct for Humanity.\u201d<\/strong> He commended humanitarian workers who remain committed to saving the lives of people affected by disasters.<\/p>\n

The event was attended by George Conway<\/strong>, Deputy Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General and Humanitarian Coordinator for Somalia, as well as representatives of organizations working in the humanitarian sector.<\/p>\n

Commissioner Mahmoud Moallim Abdulle stated that nearly 6 million people in Somalia are facing severe hunger<\/strong>, while approximately 2 million people are in Emergency (IPC Phase 4)<\/strong>. He also noted that 1.85 million children are at risk of acute malnutrition<\/strong>, while 3.8 million people are internally displaced<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The SoDMA Commissioner warned of the risks of flooding and the impacts of El Ni\u00f1o<\/strong>, noting that forecasts indicate more than a 90% likelihood of El Ni\u00f1o conditions between October and December 2026<\/strong>. He called for early warnings to be translated into immediate action to protect lives and ensure that essential services are adequately prepared.<\/p>\n

In conclusion, the Commissioner emphasized that SoDMA will continue to lead and coordinate humanitarian response efforts<\/strong>, working closely with the Federal Government, Federal Member States, and humanitarian partners.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
